Hello Ron,
My wife has been cleaning out her cedar chest this past week.
There are several items that have turned up, most of them I had forgotten
about.

I'm transcribing a letter here for the simple fact of remembering my lost
buddy. It helps me to remember the early years when Gayle and I were
children running about the homeplace . He was about five and I was about twelve. We played sandlot football, ran races across the yard, often through grassburrs, or played simulated baseball with cousins. The letter reveals our friendship, some personal concerns, and regrets of "wrong decisions made"!

The letter follows:

March 11, 1969

Dear Charles,

I have to tell you right off that I haven't received a letter since I've
been in V.N. that means any more to me than yours does. It was the most pleasant surprise I've received in an awful long time. I really felt bad about not stopping in Doches and seeing you when we passed through.

We would have ,but I didn't know you were there at the time. I really enjoyed your reminder .

My maintenence officer made the clerk in the hangar copy it and hang it
above his desk.

Glad you spent some time with mother! I'm sure she gets lonesome a lot and there isn't any of her brothers or sisters she would haveenjoyed any more.

Tell me something if you don't mind, did you see much of a change in mother since the last time you saw her? I really can't figure her out at times. Like I wrote her about a month ago and she never has answered it. I feel bad about the way my parents lives have ended up. At times I get to thinking that a lot of their trouble was caused by me. I just don't know.

Anyway, enough of that, how is your new job turning out? Hope it lives up
to everything you expect from it. I sure would like to make a trip to the
area you are in someday. Every picture I've ever seen of Oregon shows lots of lakes and trees. Is this the kind of country you're in? How close
are you to Lark, Oregon where the miner Buck Jones was trapped for a good time? -------------------------------------------------------

I would sure like to be back at S.F.A. (Stephen F. Austin) right now. I really need my ass kicked good for not finishing. Boy that's one colege that's growing by leeps and bounds. You know when I was there and playing ball, Shorty Hughes seemed like he would really have a ball team some time, but he never has come through. I've thought several times since I've been over here about going back and playing some more ball. You know I played football with the coach of Henderson High School when I was at S.F.A. Listen Charles, I hope you're enjoying yourself as much as possible because I need someone to do a little enjoying for me. Write real soon. I really enjoyed your letter and am looking forward to another!

Always your
friend and nephew,

 Gayle

On this coming November 3, 2004, it will have been thirty five years since his demise. Thanks for all you have posted in rememberance of these lost heroes! As an older person I tend to remember more often all those losses from youthful times. Sites such as yours will assure that they were not lost in vain, and will recei ve the acknowledgement of future generations.
