Round One Bi-District
Celina cruises to 53-3 bi-district win
BEDFORD - Its always good to come home, a sentiment the Celina Bobcats and their fans are sure to share.
Back in Class 2A after two years in 3A, the Bobcats looked like the state championship teams of a few years ago as they crushed Scurry-Rosser in the Class 2A Region II Bi-district championship, 53-3.
"We feel pretty good right now," admitted Celina head coach Butch Ford. "There is always a thing or two you want to correct, but for the most part we made few mistakes and we played hard. That's what you look for in a playoff team."
And what Ford and his coaching staff saw on the turf of Pennington Field they liked. Celina (11-0) was dominant in every phase of the game, overpowering an often times helpless Wildcats squad. Scurry-Rosser was held to 54 yard total rushing and 66 yards through the air. By contast, the Bobcats passed for 108 yard on seven completions and ran for a combined 339 yards with Jake San Miguel leading the way with 119 yards on 13 carries.
It was the passing game that got Celina on the board first as senior quarterback John Clark connected with junior tight end Adam Craig, the son of former SMU great Craig James, for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The point after try failed, but Celina held a 6-0 advantage through the remainder of the quarter.

Three plays into the second quarter, the Bobcats struck. This time, however, the rushing attack notched its first touchdown as Chris Torbert made his way into the end zone from 1 yard out. The two point conversion failed and Celina held a 12-0 edge.
A turnover on downs led to the Bobcats' third touchdown. Starting from its own 49 yard line, Celina took three plays to find the end zone with a pair of runs by San Miguel and the capper being a 25-yard touchdown throw from Clark to Chase Hall. Nathan Tune's PAT ran the score to 19-0.
Scurry-Rosser scored its only points of the game on its next possession. Riding on the back of junior running back D'Marcus Lang, who rushed three times for 23 yard on the drive, the Wildcats made their way to the Celina 25 yard line. With a fourth-and-15, Phillip Burley booted a 42-yard field goal to cut the score to 19-3.
Celina stretched its lead with just over a minute left before the half. Torbert scored his second touchdown of the game with a nifty 34-yard run around the left end which was set up by a crushing block by San Miguel who had lined up as a wide receiver. Tune's extra point kick put the Bobcats up 26-3, a score which held through the rest of the quarter.
San Miguel got Celina back on the board early in the second half with a 7 yard touchdown run which capped a four-play, 50-yard drive. Tune's PAT gave the Bobcats a 33-3 advantage with 10:37 left to play in the third quarter.
In the latter part of the second half Ford called off the dogs and inserted many of his second and third team players into the game. Tune was one of those players as he took over under center for Clark. He made the most of his snaps with a 13-yard touchdown pass to James with just over five minutes left in the third. Dru Prosser took over kicking duties from Tune and booted the PAT to give Celina a 40-3 edge.
Tune threw his second touchdown pass two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter as he found Alan Jones for 5 yards and the score. Prosser's kick moved the Bobcats into a 47-3 lead.
After Tune's second touchdown throw, the Celina backfield received a makeover. Freshman Seth Davis took over quarterback duties, and Austin Kessler, David Camacho, Roderick Pennington and Josh Green split time in the backfield. Green rushed five times for 37 yards on the Bobcats' next drive, and Kessler capped it off with a 6-yard touchdown run with 3:48 left to play. Prosser's PAT put the final touch on Celina's bi-district victory.
Next up for the Bobcats is the area round of playoffs, but the playoff picture is unclear at this time. The most likely scenario for Celina involves a matchup with either Whitewright (9-1) or Clarksville in Wylie depending on who advances Saturday in Greenville.
