Wylie- Celina blasted its way into the third round of the playoffs with a 31-0 Class 2A Division II Region II area playoff victory at Pirate Stadium Friday night.
Celina dominated throughout on both sides of the ball, limiting the high scoring Whitewright Tigers who average over 40 points and 400 yards of offense per game to just 137 total yards of offense and shutting them out for the first time since the Class 2A Division II Region II final Dec 7, 2003.
Whitewrights running game, usually very potent, was held in check by a hard-nosed Celina defense allowing just 42 yards on 28 carries. The Whitewright passing game faired little better only completing 8 of 22 for 87 yards while suffering 3 interceptions.
Celina took the opening kickoff and set up shop on their own 17. John Clark opened up on the ground with a seven-yard gain over the left side of the Tiger line. On 2nd and 3 Clark ripped off 7 yards through the middle for a 1st down on the Celina 31.
The next snap Celina QB John Clark on a draw play reeled off 14 more for another 1st down on the Celina 46. A loss of three and a couple of incomplete passes stalled the drive and John Clark punted for Celina to the Whitewright Tiger 18 with no return.
That is where disaster started. On the first play the Tigers were hit with a holding call moving the ball back to the nine setting up a 1st and 19. The next snap was fumbled and wound up on the Tiger 2 yard line with the Tigers still in possession. From the shotgun a bobbled snap sent the ball out of the Tiger end zone for a safety and a 2-0 Celina lead.
The Tigers chose to kick off from their own 20. Zack Babb returned the kick off to the Celina 39 where Celina set up shop for their 2nd possession of the game. A quick pass to Alan Jones garnered a 1st down on the Celina 41 but the drive would stall on a failed attempt on 4th and inches across midfield.
Whitewright took over on downs at their own 46. Two rushes by Morgan Floyd gained 5 yards, then Gary Wortham launched a pass down the left side to the Celina 24 where it was complete but jarred loose by the Celina defender and recovered there by Celina.
On first down John Clark gunned a pass down the far sideline complete to Connor Nichols who lost the foot race at the Tiger 15 and was forced out of bounds after a gain of 51.
Three plays later John Clark called his own number from the 9 and scampered around right end for the touchdown. Nathan Tune added the extra point and it was 9-0 Celina with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Drew Prosser kicked off for the Bobcats and Nathan Bush returned the kick to the Whitewright 38. Whitewright could get nothing going on a sack and two incomplete passes they punted the ball away, and Celina took over on their own 14-yard line.
Celina managed to get a seven play 35 yard drive started but fumbled the ball away at the Tiger 46.
Whitewright took over on their own 46. The QB was under intense pressure. A 2-yard sack, a hurried incompletion, and a desperation pass to Josh Daniels with a Bobcat hanging on to his arm netted 13 yards and a 1st down, Whitewright could get nothing going again, failed on 4th and 4 and turned the ball back over to Celina on downs at the Celina 35.
From their own 35 Celina mounted a sustained 65-yard drive chewing up 6 minutes off the clock and six first downs

The Tigers managed to complete a couple of passes out to the Celina 44, where Zack Babb picked one off and returned it to the Tiger 16.
With slightly more than a minute left in the half the Bobcats pass on 1st down was incomplete in the end zone. On 2nd down John Clark swept left end to move the ball to the 9. On 3rd and 3 Chase Hall took the handoff and went up the middle into the end zone to make the score 22-0 Celina with 26 seconds remaining in the half.

After three short gains on running plays Celina was forced to punt with the ball rolling dead on the Whitewright 15.
Whitewright finally got its passing game together reeling off six straight first downs to the Celina 9 yard line. John Clark on a 3rd down play picked off a Tiger pass and returned it for a touch down, but the play was negated on a pass interference call giving the Tigers a 1st and goal on the Celina 5 yard line.
A loss of 4, an incomplete pass, and a 5-yard procedure penalty made it 4th and goal from the Celina 14. Gary Wortham the Tiger QB rolled left and passed over the middle at the goal line only to have Celina DB John Clark intercept the pass and return it to the Whitewright 32 to snuff out the drive.
Celina got its ground attack in gear grinding out a couple of first downs with Jake San Miguel doing the bulk of the work. A 24-yard completion to David Commacho gave the Bobcats a 1st down on the Tiger 46. San Miguel again ground out 15 yards on 4 carries to the Tiger 31. John Clark hit Adam James over the middle at the eleven yard line with a pass but James was jarred loose from the ball and recovered by Whitewright on their own 11.
Whitewright took over but a sack and two incomplete passes forced them to punt, the ball rolling dead on the Celina 38 yard line.
A holding call moved Celina back to their own 28-yard line. On the next play Nathan Tune hit Adam James on a crossing pattern at the Whitewright 40. James gathered in the deflected pass and was finally hauled down from behind on the Tiger 5 yard line setting up a 1st and goal.
Chris Tolbert took the ball into the end zone going off left tackle on the next play to make the score 30-0 Celina with 3:50 left to play in the 4th quarter. Nathan Tune kicked the extra point to extend the lead to 31-0.

Whitewright ran one play and the game was over.
Final Score
Celina 31- Whitewright 0
Although Celina only had the ball for one series in the third quarter, they showed once again why their defense is rated one of the best in the state. It will bend, but it never breaks.
The Celina Bobcats (12-0) moves on to face the Hamilton Bull Dogs (10-2) at 7:30 Friday at Ennis in the Region II Division II Semi-Finals.
